Gutter Gossip

WES MALOTT CAPTURES KILLEEN OPEN

Austin native Wes Malott, captured the 2008 SW Region PBA Killeen Open Sunday with a 215-150 victory over rookie Jesse Buss. Malott, from Argyle, grew up in nearby Austin bowling in the youth leagues at Westgate Lanes. Currently 3rd on the points list on the national PBA Tour, Wes captured the title in his 6th try here at Hallmark Lanes.

After 13 games of qualifying Saturday and Sunday, Malott was seeded 1st, overtaking Shannon Starnes of Fort Worth, who led after the 8-game block Saturday.

In the match play round, Wes lost his first game of the best 3 out of 5 match to Ron Boroff 163-208. He wouldn’t lose another game the rest of the day. He took the next 3 games 208-168, 248-128, and 268-200 to easily move into the quarterfinals. There he defeated #8 seed George Lambert, a member of the Canadian National Team, 247-153 and 248-214. In the semifinals, he edged another Austin bowler, current SW Region points leader David Anthony (#13 seed) 235-226 to reach the final.

Buss, a PBA member for only 4 weeks, was seeded #14 going into match play. The Illinois native topped #3 Tyler Jensen 3 games to 2 (215-265, 210-193, 203-210, 235-209, and 259-165). In the quarterfinals, he swept Fort Worth’s Chris Hibbits II, 216-208, 208-197, then defeated #2 seed Starnes 217-170 to set up the final match.

In the final one-game match, both Malott and Buss struck in the first frame. Malott then put together 4 more in a row while Buss spared in the 2nd, struck in the 3rd and 5th, but opened in the 4th with a nasty split. Trailing by 53 pins after 5 frames, Buss then opened in the 6th, 7th and 8th frames to seal the victory for Malott.

Malott took home $2,700 for 1st place while Buss won $1,600 for 2nd. Starnes and Anthony each won $1,100 while Lambert, Nathan Bohr, Cole Copeland and Jensen each won $800. Xeno Garcia of Fort Worth, Gary Robinson of Austin, John Gardner of Conroe, Lee White of Odessa, Joe Findling of Mesquite, James Watson of Austin, and Boroff of Mansfield each took home $600. Another 16 bowlers cashed out of the 96 entries into this year’s field.

BILL VEHSE, JEAN HUMES CROWNED

2008 BOWLERS OF THE YEAR

Bill Vehse became the second two-time winner of the 21st annual Bowler of the Year Tournament held May 22. Bill won the inaugural tournament in 1988 and had to wait 20 years before capturing his 2nd title. Qualifying through the Guys & Dolls league, Bill fired a 227-256-221 = 704 series to finish 113 pins over his 195 average. Even with that series, he barely held on, topping Jeff Rawls (Hit & Miss) by just 2 pins. Jeff fired a 531 series on a 140 average on Hit & Miss. 64 men competed and 13 cashed. Others who cashed were: Josh Splinter (Partytimers) in 3rd at +108; Gene Love (Silver Strikers) and Ozell Wiley (Partytimers) tied for 4th at +104; Darrel Black (Friday’s Best) was 6th at +99; Thomas Yagalla (Hit & Miss) finished 7th at +98; 8th was Robert Cunningham (Partytimers) at +93; Chris Johnson (Primetimers) came in 9th at +85; and Rullie Haywood (Top Gun Scratch) finished 10th at +68. Coming in 11th was Ray Giczkowski (Partytimers) at +62; and Robert Billman (Guys & Dolls) and Steven Gray (Hit & Miss) tied for 12th at +59.

Jean Humes topped 22 others to capture the women’s crown. Jean qualified for the tournament on the last day of the last league (Hit & Miss) bowling in the Fall/Winter season. She bowls 3 leagues plus the travel league and the extra bowling paid off. On her 147 average, she rolled 161-209-181 = 551, 110 pins over average. Pat Pendleton (Guys & Dolls), who led after the first two games, fell to 2nd at +95. Sandy Monterde, the 2003 Bowler of the Year, finished 3rd at +76 while Jennifer Hahn (Partytimers), who earlier this year became the 4th woman to roll a 300 game, came in 4th at +63; and Maria Dittmer (Guys & Dolls) finished 5th at +57.

The Outback Steakhouse again graciously sponsored the Bowler of the Week competition with a complimentary dinner to the winners. Our thanks to Bill White and his staff for their support. A total of 306 league bowlers qualified for this tournament by being Bowlers of the Week or rolling at least 100 pins over their average during league play.

GET YOUR LEAGUE STANDINGS SENT TO YOU VIA E-MAIL -- FREE

We’ve had a few inquiries as to how to get your league standings e-mailed to you via leaguesecretary.com. Some folks are telling us they are being asked to pay. NOT SO!!. They’re just not going to the right place on the web. Here’s how you do it:

1. Using you web browser, go to www.leaguesecretary.com. 2. On the home page, there’s a box on the left side that says "Search", then lists "Centers", "League", or "Standings". It’s probably easier to click on "Centers". 3. When you click on "Centers", you’ve got two options: Search by Location or Search by Zip Code. Use the Zip Code option and type in "76542" and click on "Search". 4. Here you’ll see four bowling centers listed, two on Fort Hood that are no longer in business, Hallmark, and Killeen Bowlerama. 5. Click on "Show Leagues" under Hallmark Lanes. 6. Scroll down that page until you find your league. Click on your league name. That will bring up a data screen for your league. 7. In big red letters, you are asked to either "Log on" or "Register". By clicking on "Register", it will bring you to a page that asks for a User Name, E-mail address, your first and last name, and your Date of birth. Enter that data, then click "Register". If all is correct, you will soon receive a confirmation notice via e-mail telling you the registration is complete and valid. When that’s done, there’s nothing else you have to do. Each time we process your league and send it to leaguesecretary.com, you’ll automatically receive a e-mail with the standings.
